David Jones' copy of the broadcast script (Typescript) of 'In Parenthesis' (Part VII) written and produced by Douglas Cleverdon, transmitted on 19th and 20th November 1946 by the BBC Third Programme. (Part VII of 'In Parenthesis' is about the attack on Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme, July 1916). 'In Parenthesis' was adapted for the wireless (radio) by Douglas Cleverdon and was scheduled to be broadcast on Armistice Day 1939, but all schedules were cancelled after the outbreak of the Second World War. A shortened version was rehearsed in 1942 but this too was cancelled. In this 1946 broadcast the introduction was written and was pre-recorded by David Jones, and the cast included actors like Richard Burton and Dylan Thomas. The first radio performance of 'In Parenthesis' made a profound effect on many of those listening. |

File descriptions(s):

A typed note (29th November 1975) explaining the margin notes written by David Jones in his copy of the broadcast script (Typescript) of 'In Parenthesis' written and produced by Douglas Cleverdon, transmitted on 19th and 20th November 1946 by the BBC Third Programme. This includes the belief that the vocal recording had a profound and disturbing effect on David Jones, a statement which academics do not all agree with.
