Albert Midwinter served in the war by looking after horses, using his experience as a groom before the war. He undertook tasks such as bringing the wounded back from the front and taking supplies and ammunition to the front. He made the decision to volunteer for service very early in the war, in October 1914, at the age of 38. Albert survived the war. Weakened by a bout of pneumonia, he was recovering from influenza when hostilities ended.
