John Simpson, who was in the Merchant Navy, telegrammed his wife in Aberdeen to tell her he was safe, despite his ship having sunk in Plymouth. All hands were saved. Nine days later he telegrammed her again, this time from Salcombe, to say that his ship had scuppered again. This time several others had died.
