Xmas gift box 1914
Royal Scots cap badge

My grandfather John Kimmet was a private in the 1/4 Royal scots (Reg. number 245031)
He fought at Gallipoli and seconb battle of the Somme. The photo was taken while he was on leave - probably after returning from Gallipoli.
The only story I know of him at Gallipoli was that his lack of height saved his life. He was standing on a beach talking to ataller comrade when a bullet passed over his head and hit the man in the forehead killing him instantly.

The Xmas 1914 cigarette/chocolate box and his cap badge which he is wearing in the photo were brought back by him to his family in 1918.

Although he survived the war my grandmother said his health was never the same after the war due to his experiences and having to live at times up to his waist in mud.

He went to work in the Leith shipyards contributing to the second war effort and died in 1946.
