60871: War memorial and roll of honour, Presbyterian Church, Llandrindod Wells
Photographs and extracts from the programme for the unveiling and dedication in remembrance of the fallen in the Great War, 1914-1918, June 11th 1922. Officiating minister: Revd S. George.
William J. Powell (father of Walter Powell) was an elder and secretary/treasurer of the Presbyterian Church in Ithon Road, Llandrindod. He and his wife Clara lost two sons, Percy and Clifford, both died of wounds, and their youngest son returned from France in 1919, safe, but suffering the effects of being gassed. W.J. Powell's younger brother Humphrey also died of his wounds. The war memorial was unveiled in 1922 and was a gift from William and Clara Powell. Walter's notes record that "Father presented it in memory of fallen Tommies". The diaries of W.J. Powell (also part of this collection) show that a roll of honour was being kept in the church throughout the war, and this particular memorial was erected in 1918, completed in 1922. It shows the names of all the men from the congregation who served (about 95-100) - not only those killed (22 men).
Part of a collection relating to Walter H. Powell, Llandrindod Wells, (private / driver M2-267205 Mechanised Transport Army Service Corps). Born 1898, Walter tried to join up under-age on a number of occasions, finally succeeding in 1916. He served many months - (more than 2 years?) - in different army units in Britain, before going over to France. He served as a despatch rider for an anti-aircraft battery in 1918-1919. Walter was gassed "suffering the effects all his life". He was a founder member of Toc-H in Llandrindod, and a keen footballer - he died in 1994 aged 96. However Walter's older brothers (Cliff and Percy Powell) and his uncle (Humphrey Powell) died of wounds sustained during the war.
