60786: Letter from POW camp from 2nd Lt Charles E. Carr

Lt CE Carr, 20th London Regiment (my grandfather) was taken prisoner south of St Quentin on March 23rd 1918. This is an image of one of his letters to his fiancee Connie Barry, and an image of a typed transcript.

In this letter he writes of hearing of the death of his brother, Captain Leslie George Carr (also London Regiment, died of wounds Boulogne Military Hospital, 27th April 1918).

Written on headed notepaper: 'Absender : | Kriegsgefangenensendung 2nd Lieut C. E. Carr 20th London Regiment | Abteilung 1 Stube 34 | Offiziergefangenenlager Mainz.'

Second Lieutenant Charles E. Carr, 20th (Blackheath and Woolwich) bN. London Regiment, began the war as a Private in the 16th (Queen's Westminster Rifles) Bn. London Regiment (Service no. 3278, later 550880).

His brother, Captain Leslie George Carr, M.C. and bar, 1st (Royal Fusiliers) Bn. London Regiment, attached 4th Bn. South Staffordshire Regiment, died of wounds 27th April 1918 aged 21. The son of Charles Thomas and Eliza Ann Carr, of 97, Inchmery Rd., Catford, London, he is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
