After an acident on a camel in June 1917 and a possible bout of Malaria he was declared unfit for active service.

However he stayed on in Egypt for the duration of the war carrying out admin duties Ras-el-Tin at Alexandria. The camp changed its name to the Aliens internment camp on March 16th 1917
