online resource
posted on 2024-02-18, 15:07 authored by Great War Archive Project Team

A group photograph of officers and men wearing crossed machine gun capbadges. This may date from Pte. Fosters service with the Motor Section, Machine gun Corps, or the early tank units, known as Heavy Section / Heavy Branch Machine Gun Corps until July 1917. Note that the officer seated with the dog appears to be wearing a mouring band on his left sleeve.

Pte. 200816 William Ernest Foster, D Coy. Heavy Section, Machine Gun Corps (later D Bn. Heavy Branch, Machine Gun Corps and 4th Bn. Tank Corps), served originally in the Machine Gun Corps (Motors). Photograph of a parade in a market square, England, just prior to or just after the outbreak of war. The front rank are Hussars in full dress; behind them stand infantry of the line in full dress (from a 'Royal' regiment, as indicated by the dark blue facings of the red jackets), and finally a unit of Cadets in service dress. Pte. Foster is possibly among the Cadets.
