On 29 July 1914 Staff Paymaster Joseph Theodore Gedge was preparing to go to sea. This is the covering note he sent to his uncle with a "farewell letter" to be passed to his parents in the event of his death. Joseph was killed when HMS Amphion struck a mine on 6 August 1914. Joseph was the first British officer to die in the war.
