58531: Photograph of Somerset Light Infantry
Charles Sydney Warwick, my great-grandfather, is in the back row, fourth in from the right.

Corporal 265460 Charles Sydney Warwick, Somerset Light Infantry.
The picture probably dates to mid-1915, before the withdrawal of heavy machine guns from infantry battalions and after the introduction of the Lewis gun. Pictured are Maxim guns (on tripods) and the lighter, air-cooled Lewis gun (which the infantry would retain as their support weapon). The strange object in the middle of the picture is an Infantry range finder, which worked by measuring distances optically.
