The site of the Front Line on July 1st 1916 (the German front line was to the right of the crossroads and the Allies to the left). Major Kent and his men charged the enemy trenches from here and were mown down. The telegraph pole to the right marks the site of the German strong point that caused so many casualties during British attacks on July 1st, it was finally destroyed by the 1st Welsh Fusiliers late that evening. The photograph is taken from the point of the Sunken Road which led up the hill to the Bois Francais area.
