A collection of papers collated by Joseph Hirst, City Architect of Hull, relating to his son, who served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the East Yorkshire Regiment in France. The volume includes a wide variety of materials, including: newspaper cuttings, a Christmas card, battalion orders, notes on training soldiers (including a ten week syllabus), luggage and kit lists, details of knowledge requirements for young officers, exam papers with Hirst's answers, Officers' mess regulations, barrack room instructions, standing orders, a booklet entitled "A Short History of the East Yorkshire Regiment", documents relating to a court martial, photographs, and letters, including one from Buckingham Palace welcoming home prisoners of war.
