A typewritten transcript of an extract from the 15th November 1918 edition of The London Gazette, reporting the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal to Corporal J. H. Manchester for "conspicuous gallantry and resource in an attack". Beneath the extract is typed "Certified true Extract.", a signature, "for Lieut Colonel, Officer i/c Infantry Records, No.6.District.", and "Lichfield. 10/5/1920."

John Manchester (Service Number 240698) served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and later a sergeant. He was severely gassed in the trenches, but went on to serve in the RAF during the Second World War.

Part of a collection relating to John Manchester, deposited by his daughter-in-law, who describes him as "a very modest man".
