Manchester for "conspicuous gallantry and resource in an attack". Beneath the extract is typed "Certified true Extract.", a signature, "for Lieut Colonel, Officer i/c Infantry Records, No.6.District.", and "Lichfield. 10/5/1920."

John Manchester (Service Number 240698) served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and later a sergeant. He was severely gassed in the trenches, but went on to serve in the RAF during the Second World War.

Part of a collection relating to John Manchester, deposited by his daughter-in-law, who describes him as "a very modest man".
