An army form commending Corporal John Manchester for "conspicuous courage and good leadership", during operations which took place east of Le Touret on the night of 3rd September 1918, and recommending that he should receive the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
Manchester (Service Number 240698) served with the 1/5th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment as a corporal and later a sergeant, and was awarded the DCM. He was severely gassed in the trenches, but went on to serve in the RAF during the Second World War.
Part of a collection relating to John Manchester, deposited by his daughter-in-law, who describes him as "a very modest man".
