John Brownie enlisted into the Black Watch in 1916 from his home in Glasgow. He had been a ploughman but had moved to the city looking for work as he had at that time a wife and 3 children to support. Due to no work he felt he should serve his country. He spent 2 years in France with the 51st Battalion and received a leg injury in 1918. From his hospital bed in 1918 he sent a loving Christmas card home to Glasgow for his wife and young children. He fully recovered and returned to Glasgow and lived a long live and fathered a further 5 children.
