I knew very little of my father's service in the First World War until july 2007 when contacted by Rupert Drake, Newark, Notts. who was researching 1st Heavy East Hull Battery. He provided details of my father's time in South Africa and France etc.

He also identified my only photograph as being taken at Charlton Park, near London prior to embarkation to South Africa, finally landing in Killindine/Mombassa on 14/3/1916. In Aug/Sept 1917 he embarked for Tanga and Zanzibar, then Kimbua,Lindie and on to Dar-es-Salam 12/12/1917.

Returned home to Plymouth 30/1/1918, then on to Hilsea for embarkation to France 15/7/1918 where he took part in the battles for the Hindenburg Line, Sept. 1918, crossing the Selle, October 1918 and finally Saulzour in early 1919 whwere he was demobilised.
