This photograph is one of two which depict the same scene, and was either taken, or collected, by 494 Sergeant Joseph Cecil Thompson of the 9th Battalion AIF during his service at Galliopli and in Egypt. He was evacuated from Gallipoli due to illness in about October 1915, and after the retreat from Gallipoli, served in Egypt - the dates and subject matter of the photos seem to correspond with these dates. Many of the photos have inscriptions in pencil on the back in his handwriting, some are inscribed in the margins of the negative prior to printing, and one negative exists along with its positive print, so it seems likely that he was the photographer.

Editor's Comment:
The 9th Bn., as part of 3rd Brg. Australian Imperial Force, were the first to land at the ANZAC beachead on Gallipoli, 25th April 1915.
