William Cranston is photographed here wearing the Cross of St George, which was awarded while he was serving in the Royal Scots Greys before he was commissioned. He was one of seven members of the regiment to receive this particular award.

Second Lieutenant (acting Lieutenant Colonel) William James Cranston DSO, Royal Scots Fusiliers and Staff, served additionally in the North Staffordshire Regiment and commanded the 13th Bn. King's Liverpool Regiment and 3rd Bn. Machine Gun Corps.
