This is a transcript of my grandfathers diary written in pencil in a small ruled notebook. It was hard to read and where possible names and places have been checked using his war records and the internet.
Editor's Comment: Able Seaman J36553 William Ernest Varley, Royal Navy, born Nottingham, 13th January 1898, served aboard HMS Chatham, HMS Europa, Royal Navy Boatships etc.
