An explanation acompanied the menu: N° 1, made from Oxo cubes; 2, tinned lobster; 3, tinned chicken; 4, ration beef; 5, pears & cream; 6, gingerbread (out of a parcel); 7, savoury, sardines on toast; the meal was to celebrate the captain's birthday and was served in an old Bedouin marquee. The names of the courses include oases where they had camped on the way.
Editor's Comment: Pte. 2393 John Clarke Morten, 1/7th Bn. Manchester Regiment, was commissioned Second Lieutenant and later attached to the Royal Air Force.
