On 6/8/1914 Peter's brother Joseph was killed on HMS Amphion. Peter postponed his plans to train for the priesthood and joined the Suffolk Regiment. Peter landed in France on 29/5/1915, was promoted Temporary Lieutenant on 10/6/1915, and was killed in action near Hulloch [Loos] on 13/10/1915.

Editor's Comment:
Staff Paymaster Joseph Theodore Gedge, Royal Navy, is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial. H.M.S. Amphion was the first Royal Navy ship to be lost in the war, hitting a mine layed by the Königin Luise.

Lt. Peter Gedge, 7th Bn. Suffolk Regiment, is commemorated on the Loos memorial. He fell in the "Action of the Hohenzollern Redoubt", 13th October 1915, his battalion attacking as part of the 12th (Eastern) Division.
