53763: Poem printed on postcard written by Stephen Moran
Stephen Moran was billeted with Mr and Mrs A. Payne, Orchard Cottage, West Runton, one of many over the war years. Mr A. Payne was a blacksmith, wheelright and carpenter, and held a contract for shoeing mules and horses sent to war.

Postcard with printed poem composed by Stephen Moran, Derbyshire Yeomanry, 'in his Dug-out in the Dardanelles': Poem begins 'As the night-shades fall o'er the Battlefield, and the fighting seems to cease'. Printed for charity: 'The proceeds of this Fund are to be used for Christmas Comforts for the Soldiers.'
Pte. 1538 (later 75092) Stephen Moran, Derbyshire Yeomanry. The regiment moved to Egypt in April 1915, serving at Gallipoli (the Dardanelles) from August to December 1915. After the evacuation, they returned, becoming part of the Western Frontier Force until February 1916.
