Written whilst Edward Thomas began his field-training as an officer cadet with the Royal Artillery in London. He had first been attracted by the trumpets in barracks in Trowbridge in October 1916. This manuscript is untitled but is labeled 'The Trumpet' in 'Edward Thomas Collected Poems'.
