Pte. Foster was entitiled to one wound stripe and two blue overseas service chevrons (indicating he had been entered once in casualty lists, and served two years overseas after 1914). He enlisted in Mansfield on 16th February 1916, and was discharged on 11th April 1919 as medically unfit after being wounded in August, 1918.
Pte. 200816 William Ernest Foster, D Coy. Heavy Section, Machine Gun Corps (later D Bn. Heavy Branch, Machine Gun Corps and 4th Bn. Tank Corps), served originally in the Machine Gun Corps (Motors).
