My grandfather Dr. Robert John Helsby joined the 20th Battalion (4th Salford Pals) Lancashire Fusiliers and served as their medical officer. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre while serving with the Battalion after an action at Poelcappelle in January 1918, and the Military Cross while serving with the Royal Artillery in July 1918.
