The attached photographs are of a pocket New Testament Bible carried by my grandfather Arthur White throughout his time in France during the 1914-18 war. The photographs show that the Bible had two Temperance Hymns, Coloured Pictures with the text and that Grandfather had signed the pledge of allegiance to the Temperance movement. This was because at the outset of war he was a very religious man with a father who was a lay preacher at Salem Congregational Church, Leeds, Yorkshire. The final photograph shows grandfather in his uniform in 1914 with his father, wife and children. The family history says that he was most proud to volunteer and thought it his duty to do so, ably supported by his wife and father. The sad post script to this story is that grandfather was badly gassed in 1917 and sent home where it was said he was unable to work again and became depressed and turned to drinking. This naturally caused great heartache to Great Grandfather and hardship to his children. My grandfather Arthur White died aged 45 in 1925. I never knew my grandfather as I was not born 'till 1942, however the more you read of the terrible hardship endured by our soldiers the more proud I am of my grandfather.
