A battalion in column of fours marching towards and then away from the camera: men smile and wave; two with Lewis guns. The men are Hampshires, presumably 2nd Battalion, of 88th Brigade. The men are in fighting order, note the tin triangles on their packs as an attempt for observers behind the front to tell where this regiment was during the confusion of battle. At the end of the column some men are carrying rolled-up stretchers.
