Sister Sarah Alice Claridge trained at Stafford Nursing Institute and was awarded a Red Cross Badge in 1897. She served in the Boer War from 1900 to 1902. After war was declared in August 1914 she was appointed by the St John Ambulance Brigade to select a group of nurses suitable for service at the front. Having selected the appropriate number she then went overseas in 1915 as Sister in charge of the group, serving on the Western Front. Very little is known of her actual service but she was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal as a member of the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. She served in WW2 as an ARP warden and was awarded the WW2 Defence Medal.
