Alfred Clayson was employed on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk as a wheelwright. He joined the 5th Battalion Norfolk Regiment on 4th August 1914 and was embodied from the Estate on 5th August 1914. He served in the Salonika campaign and later joined the Royal Air Force. In April 1919 he was presented with the sum of 30 as the 'King's wish to present all his unmarried employees with a present of money on their return from the war'. The amount Alfred received was based on the length of his war service.
