William John Brown was born in Worcester in late 1897 or early 1898, the son of Harry and Ada Brown. The family resided in the St Paul's area of the city. He enlisted in the army on 9th February 1915 when he gave his age as 19 years - in actual fact he was only 17 years of age. William sent a number of letters, postcards and other ephemera home to his mother before he was killed in action on 10th July 1916 during the battle of the Somme. He was just 18 years of age.
