Josiah Pickering was born and lived in Stourport-on-Severn where, before the war, he worked in the local tin plate manufacturing industry.

He began his military service in November 1914, but was gassed and initially sent home.

He later served as a cook, a mess waiter and finally as an officer's batman until he left the Army in January 1919.

After the war, he became the landlord of the Rock Tavern in Stourport.
