Joseph Smith was born on 3rd December 1893 at Whitwell Common, Whitwell, Derbyshire, the second son of Albert & Annie (nee Dean) Smith. Joseph followed his father into the coalmines and was a pony driver/below ground. He enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action at the Battle of Aisne on 20th September 1914 aged 20. He is commemorated at La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France. Joseph was single.
