4066: Reginald Smith of Whitwell, Derbyshire

Reginald Smith was born on 11th January 1891 at Whitwell Common, Whitwell, Derbyshire to Albert and Annie (nee Dean) Smith. Prior to the First World War, Reginald worked at a poultry farm in Burton Fens, Lincolnshire before emigrating to Argentina. He returned to England in 1914 following the death of his younger brother, Joseph, a Private with the Sherwood Foresters. Joseph was killed at the Battle of Aisne, France on 20th September 1914. Reginald married Amy Barton and they had one child, Margaret May. Reginald was killed in action on 28th June 1916, Aged 25. On that day he had volunteered for a daytime raid on an any sap during which he was killed. He is commemorated at the Arras Memorial, France.
