John William Turton (known as Jack to his family) was born in 1888 in Crawley near Doncaster. He was a lay preacher at Morley Wesleyan (Methodist) Church. When he was 12 he was a labourer in Morley and then a greengrocer. He died of shell wounds on 07/07/1918 and is buried at Pernois British Cemetery, Halloy-Les-Pernois, France. His epitaph reads: "THOUGH DEATH DIVIDES STILL MEMORY CLINGS FROM HIS WIFE L. TURTON, MORLEY".
