William served in the war from 1914-18, and was a Regimental Sergeant Major. He had a younger brother serving too. William told his younger brother Joseph to wait to be called up to the army, but Joseph volunteered early as he wanted to be with his older brother. Joseph was killed a few weeks on arrival in France, aged 22.
William was buried alive during battle with just his feet showing, but then he was dug out and so his life was saved. He was presented the D.C.M by the King in Belgium.
