<p dir="ltr">The contributor's mother gave him these documents, which her father had kept with him through the war. The contributor's grandfather was James Whiteman. </p><p dir="ltr">The documents include permissions for him to go to the front lines, carrying ammunition to the trenches on the Western Front, a vital and dangerous role. </p><p dir="ltr">J. W. may not have been able to write, hence the ticks on some boxes in the documents. </p><p dir="ltr">One object is a photo of a friend with whom J. W. enlisted. One object is a Christmas card, made by French people and sold to troops on the front, sent home by J. W. to his Great Uncle Dave. </p><p dir="ltr">One object is the discharge papers for J. W.</p>
