3544: A dangerous job, ammunition carrier

online resource
posted on 2024-01-15, 08:31 authored by Lest We Forget Project Team

The contributor's mother gave him these documents, which her father had kept with him through the war. The contributor's grandfather was James Whiteman.

The documents include permissions for him to go to the front lines, carrying ammunition to the trenches on the Western Front, a vital and dangerous role.

J. W. may not have been able to write, hence the ticks on some boxes in the documents.

One object is a photo of a friend with whom J. W. enlisted. One object is a Christmas card, made by French people and sold to troops on the front, sent home by J. W. to his Great Uncle Dave.

One object is the discharge papers for J. W.
