32334: Lockdown skills
A typical day in lockdown involves waking up at 8:15 and going on a run as I have recently completed couch to 5K and am trying to maintain my stamina. I come back home for breakfast and a shower and then get ready for the day. Having had to return from my year abroad, I use my time in lockdown to work on my Bridge Essay, read for my degree and practice my French as much as possible under the circumstances. I have also been trying to be more creative whether that is making a crown for my sister's dress-up zoom call or getting the sewing machine out and running up some masks ready for when we start to unlock. I found a simple pattern online and then have developed it to include a wire to shape the mask around the face, I also make them to size for each of my family members. I have also been organising the house, at the start of lockdown I organised every cupboard and drawer in my kitchen as well as had a sort out in my room and put some clothes on depop. More recently, due to the good weather, I have been doing some gardening with my mum, which we have really enjoyed especially when the garden centres reopened- we like to support our small local garden centre! I have also been doing some baking and even made a foccacia at the start of lockdown- which was only possible when we found a yeast and flour supplier as at the start these were really hard to come by! As a family we have spent lots of time together which has been nice as in the last few years my sister and I have gone to university and my brother, mum and dad have been working. My brother and dad worked from home for a couple of months, before my brother got furloughed. My mum was also furloughed but is enjoying using her free time to do tasks around the house she didn't get time to in the past. I think lockdown has taught me the importance of family and friends, as well as the importance of communication and technology. My nana had lived up to this point without any internet, and it was only due to the pandemic that as a family we got her set up with wi-fi and an iPad so we could FaceTime with her as well as send pictures and messages of what we have been up to, it has been really nice to be able to speak to her everyday and having her connected to the internet has hopefully helped some of the loneliness of this time for her.
