321: Richard Mallet (compass)

The contributor's grandfather, Richard Mallet, used the compass to find his way out of no man's land. He joined the army as soon as he could straight after school and fought in the Battle of the Somme. During the battle, he received a head injury which meant that he was sent home. He later wrote about being lost in no man's land.
