Sergeant Thomas Milne Runcie was my late husband's grandfather. He was born about 1870 and married Mary Hutcheon Wilson on 04/09/1891 at St Nicholas, Aberdeen. One of their children was also called Thomas Milne Runcie. He was born in 1894 and served as a sapper in the First World War. He is the subject of a separate story on Lest We Forget.

Sergeant Thomas Milne Runcie had considerable experience in the Territorial Force before the war. He was awarded the Volunteer Long Service Medal. We have a Discharge Certificate for him dated 14th April 1912. It says that he enlisted on 15th April 1908. However, he had earlier service: there is note added that he served in the 1st A. R. E. (V.) 20 years 100 days We have another Discharge Certificate for him dated 20/03/07. He says he was on the Muster Roll of the "A" Coy 1st Battn Gordon Highrs Volunteer Corps from 29th November 1886 to 14th January 1888.

We have a photograph of him and several group photos that include him from his days in war service 1914-18.
