Maternal grandfather left Leigh, Lancashire in around 1912-13, emigrating to Australia. Joined AIF in 1914, sailing from Fremantle. Fought at Gallipoli and the Somme. Suffered an illness and returned to the Leigh after being discharged. Not accepted home by his wife. Probably suffered shell shock (PTSD). Later committed suicide.
