A brass button shield, impressed RGA 1412226. Such items were used to slide under brass buttons on uniforms so that the button could be polished while the cloth of the uniform was protected from staining. The contributor had no information about the provenance of the item, and she thought it might have been in the possession of an ancestor with the surname GLYNN or GOLDEN, and believed it might date from WW2.

The impressed "RGA" is almost certainly an abbreviation for ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY, a unit which related to WW1. Taken with the appearance of age and considerable use it is therefore more likely that the item is from WW1 rather than WW2.
