He was in the Merchant Navy before the war, then he joined the Royal Navy and served in the war on HMS Venus, he survived the war and went back into the Merchant Navy until 1922 then went into farming.

He received two medals during the war and received a gratuity at the end of the War due to the loss of one of his fingers in action.
