2088: William George Hull ("Bully")

online resource
posted on 2024-01-16, 15:02 authored by Lest We Forget Project Team

Born in 1893/4 (documents say 1894 but birth certificate says 1893). William Hull was in the Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars and the 101 Machine Gun Corps. He was in one of the last cavalry charges of the First World War at El Mughar. When he was onboard a ship in the Mediterranean, it was torpedoed by the German Navy and he was rescued by the Japanese.

He then went onto the front line as a machine gunner where he received a bullet wound to the leg and was shipped back to Southampton (one photo shows him with the cane he had to use after the war).

He remained a private throughout the war and took part in the Gallipoli campaign. He joined up at the beginning of the war, probably in London.

The passes are from his time in Egypt, where he got the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. He then went back to work for a department store after the war which he had wanted to do beforehand.
