1815: Robert Emmerson

Robert Emmerson was the great uncle of Menston resident Joe Dixon. He was an assistant schoolteacher who enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry [21st Btn.] in 1915 then to the Yorks and Lancs and subsequently commissioned as a temporary officer 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd D.L.I until 30th January 1919.

He went to France on 29th June 1916 and was released from actual military service on 31st January 1919. He was allowed to wear his uniform for a month allowing him to obtain plain clothes! He had three nephews: Charles Emmerson, who was with the Royal Naval Division in 1918; Joseph Emmerson with the 5th Btn. D.L.I 1918; and John Harrison Emmerson also with the 5th Btn. D.L.I in 1918.
