Edward Thomas Dixon enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry and was killed on 31st December 1915. In the 9th Btn Diary it states that the battalion were relieving the 8th Btn in the trenches in Sanctuary Wood near Ypres, Belgium. Being New Year's Eve, the artillery, machine guns and grenadiers strafed the enemy at 10.55 pm and at 11.55 pm with good effect. The Germans made no reply except for four shells, one of which exploded in bay of B4 opposite the 'BIRDCAGE' killing one man and wounding three others. Edward was the only one to be killed that night. He has no known grave.
