1698: George William and Fanny Haynes

George William Haynes was a grocer's roundsman (at what is now Faringdon Furnishings). In 1916, the family's horse was requisitioned - Fanny, the contributor's grandmother who died in 1958, said "so they'll probably take me next!"

George was the head of a family of 7 (George, Fanny, and 5 children). The contributor believes that George volunteered to join the Army. He initially served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment before being transferred to the 'Ox and Bucks' Light Infantry. He was killed in August 1917 and his body was never found. He is commemorated on a time clock memorial (he was a bell ringer at All Saints).

George's brother had been killed two years earlier in 1915. Little is known about George's other brother, Oliver Mark Haynes.
