Gilbert Joseph Brinsden, whose family had emigrated to Australia in the 1850s, was born in the 1870s. He owned a shop in Australia and was sent a letter with a white feather in early 1917 because he had not volunteered to fight. This encouraged him to sign up, and he was killed in October 1917.
