Joseph came from Peckham and worked in a sawmill. His grandfather was a (horse-drawn) fireman, and (horse-drawn) carter.

Joseph was a horseman, though it's not known what sort, but he served with the 17th Lancers.

He died when with the Royal West Kent, attached to the 7th Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers. But Ancestry.com states his theatre of war was Antwerp, so there is a discrepancy here.

The family story is that he was shot in the back while on horseback.
