Alfred, who served in the 84th Field Ambulance, 28th Division, was mentioned in dispatches for Services in the Field. He was commended twice, and received a signed award/letter from Winston Churchill (who was then Secretary of State).
Later Alfred was awarded an OBE by King George V for his services in the war. The family believes he collected this at St James' Palace from Prince Edward.
